After Stops in DC, Atlanta, New Jersey and Oakland, Jollof Festival Hits Los Angeles

Jollof Festival, presented by Demand Africa, returns to LA Saturday, August 17, 2019 from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm at 1001 N Broadway. The festival celebrates a West African cultural favorite that appears on tables from Senegal to Cameroon. The recipe is deceptively simple, easy to cook but hard to perfect and comes in many variables based on geographic location, culture and other metrics. Jollof Festival showcases the ingredients and tastes that vary from different West African regions and invites local chefs, restaurants and caterers to come together in a friendly competition between countries to decide who in the city has best Jollof Rice. Attendees will have the chance to sample an anonymous variety of Jollof dishes, each with its own flavorful touch from participants representing 5 West African countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia and Senegal. Attendees will then vote for which dish they liked best. The festival has already made its East coast stops in cities like Washington D.C. and Atlanta where upsets were plentiful, underdogs came out on top, and recounts were demanded. Each participating country’s Jollof is assigned and labeled a specific color. Guests tastes all Jollof options then use their phones to vote for the color they liked best, unaware of which color is associated with which country. It is a rivalry that spans generations and is not to be taken lightly.

In addition to the Jollof competition, festival attendees can also shop an array of vendor stalls, purchase full plates of delicious cuisine from local African restaurants, enjoy tropical cocktails and dance Afrique beats. Celebrity Hosts and influencers show up in droves to mingle and rep their native countries. Vendors including Ankara, artists, craftsmen, jewelry makers, and food vendors of course, festival merchandise including the fan favorite t-shirt that reads “You

are Jollof – don’t let anyone tell you that you are just plain white rice”. Tickets start at $15 and can be purchased on Eventbrite. VIP tickets are $100 and include unlimited food, cocktails and a private lounge area. The event is open to all ages (children 12 and under enter for free) and runs from 3pm to 8pm.

All ticket holders will receive 50% a year’s membership with Demand Africa, the largest streaming platform celebrating contemporary Africa’s influence on the world. Demand Africa’s mission, like its principal cable offering The Africa Channel, is to demystify modern Africa and its people to viewers across the globe.
